The four parts of this song-cycle are inspired by some excerpts of Walt Whitman’s « Leaves of grass ». The voice, fervent and lyrical, expresses alternately a mystical ecstasy facing the beauty of the unfathomable Universe, the dionysiac joy of a freely singing soul, the peaceful and serene acceptation of the unavoidable Death, and the final merging in the infinite of space and eternity. The organ is here more than a simple accompaniment, but it has to sound really like an orchestra with its rich palette of tones.
