Rainer-Maria Rilke's poetical world, with its fervour, its visionary, almost mystical strength and its exceptional musicality, was always very close to G. Hilpipre's mind. The four songs of the present cycle set in music excerpts of the First Duino Elegy (movements I and II) and two Sonnets to Orpheus (movements III and IV). The vocal part as well as the treatment of the orchestra aim to render that thrilling sensitivity in a highly concentrated writing.
