The main character of that very short piece for solo cello is its poetic nature. Despite its brevity, we could call it a mini tone poem, which programme is the passage from dark anxiety to the deepest inner peace, reached by contemplation. Starting mysteriously, the musical flow, after a brief and fiery transition aspiring to the heights, reaches a realm of contemplative ecstasy that nothing can trouble until the very end of the piece.
The German title, first verse of a famous poem of Goethe (« Wandrers Nachtlied II »), reflects the musical content. We find in it the freely atonal idiom familiar to the composer, always in an intensively expressive purpose. The musical writing, using a wide instrumental range and artificial harmonics, has to create a sensation of space and elevation.
