This Magnificat, Op. 50, is the composer's first major choral work. The text from St. Luke's Gospel is spoken by Mary during her visit to her cousin Elizabeth, both of whom are pregnant. This is known as the Visitation episode. The richly varied text is followed by contrasting musical sections, at times majestic, at times intimate and gentle. The work comes to a masterly conclusion with the power of organ and choir. Its premiere at Notre-Dame de Paris was a resounding success.
