Suntem Noi Aici for viola, was written in 2006 and first performed, in the Bucharest Athenaeum, by the remarkable Romanian violist Cornelia Petroiu. It is founded upon a Romanian/Moldavian song, an incantation to ward off the evils of fate. The music begins by elaborating the melody of the song and then moves into a wide-ranging discourse, taking into account the possibilities of the instrument and, especially, the performer, but always remaining in contact with the spirit of the original material.
