I chose this title of “cantilena” for its sweet sonority that evokes the dreaming dimension of the world of childhood. These two songs are two small pieces for violin students who already have a good technique. They are like two kinds of fantastic creatures straight out of legends, the first a mischievous gnome, the second a more fanciful forest’s troll which one attempts to catch without ever succeeding, a playful allegory of music that still escapes us.
