The six "Picturesque Studies" have a distinctive feature: they come in pairs. "Gengis Khan" and "Alii Mundi" call to mind a legendary Mongolia. The first one depicts its cruelty and the second, its pastoral side. The following two were inspired by Andersen's famous heroines: "The Little Mermaid" and "Thumbelina". The last two pieces pay mischievous tributes to Elgar and Britten. Although they are short, these studies are difficult and seek to exploit the entire range of sounds of the oboe.
