3rd string quartet "my sweetest choice" (2015)
A tribute to Henri Dutilleux
With its "so French" allure, mon choix le plus doux is the first line of Henri Purcell's "O solitude, my sweetest choice!", based on the eponymous poem by Marc-Antoine Girard de Saint-Amant. This poetic dimension, linked to melancholy, emerges progressively from this quartet which, starting in a vehement if not tormented manner, gradually calms down.
In a single and ample movement, this 3rd string quartet is constructed with the help of multiple motifs of very different characters where, to listen, is to be immersed in a sound flow made of dynamics, tensions, suspensions... a kind of kinetic architecture constantly remodelled but in dynamic balance, sometimes soft and poetic, tender and sensitive, sometimes brutal, breaking and exalted.
