The aim of the present work is to provide a reference point for finding one's place in the thicket of violin history. What began as a simple working document for the pedagogy class at the CNSM in Paris has expanded over the years to include a chronological overview of the various schools, country by country.
Thus, after a brief description of the instrument and developments in violin and bow making, the text brings to life several chapters in the exceptional destiny of the "instrumental soprano", its makers and its virtuosos, the unfolding of which is both a repository of knowledge and an invitation to journey into the imagination of musicians.
